December 2026 · Peacebuilding

On 21 December 2025, RACI joined MCJL, ARLPI, JPD, THP, and CAPACITA in convening an inter-religious dialogue in Yumbe Town, following a period of tension between Muslim and Christian communities that led to unrest, property damage, and displacement within the area.

The dialogue brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including the Resident District Commissioner, the District Kadhi, Christian religious leaders, local council leadership, youth representatives, security officials, media representatives, and cultural leadership from the Aringa Kingdom — creating a rare, inclusive space for open reflection and dialogue.

Participants examined how misinformation and unverified claims contributed to the escalation of tensions, and discussed the responsibility of religious platforms, media broadcasters, and community leaders in preventing the spread of harmful rhetoric. Particular attention was given to the vulnerability of youth to manipulation and mobilisation, especially amid broader political and economic uncertainty.

The dialogue also addressed the importance of responsible, timely security responses and the need to strengthen early-warning systems within communities. Participants agreed that the unrest was not a reflection of religious conflict, but rather the result of individual incitement, weak preventive structures, and politicised narratives — reinforcing the importance of accountability and community-led peacebuilding.

Key outcomes included a collective condemnation of the violence by religious, cultural, and security leaders, renewed commitment to interfaith collaboration, and agreement on the need for structured, ongoing peace messaging. Participants recommended strengthening interfaith councils as early-warning mechanisms, promoting responsible media practices, supporting trauma healing for affected families, and investing in youth-focused peacebuilding and civic education — particularly ahead of upcoming elections.

RACI remains committed, alongside its partners, to advancing peaceful coexistence and resilient community relationships across Northern Uganda and West Nile.
